Thermodynamic information of the melts involving rare earth
halides and alkali halides plays an important role in the preparation of rare
earth metals by molten salt electrolysis and by metallothermic reduction. Also
the knowledge of thermodynamics of molten salts containing rare earth is useful
in the understanding the recycle processing of spent fuel from fast nuclear
reactors. From the point of view of fundamental study, thermodynamic properties
and phase diagrams are very important to understand the interionic interactions
in the melts. As one of systematic studies, the phase diagram of the system
DyCl3-KCl was re-determined by calphad technique and experimental method. It
was found that there existed two stable intermediate compounds K3DyCl6 and
KDy2Cl7. The enthalpies of
formation and entropies of those compounds were estimated. The calculated phase
diagram almost agree well to the measured one performed by Seifert group.
Keywords: DyCl3-KCl phase diagram, calphad, thermodynamic assessment.
