Information concerning the equilibrium diagrams of the molten salts is required for investigating their physicochemical properties and for electrolytic preparation of the corresponding metals. Almost all the phase diagrams of the alkali-rare earth chlorides binary systems have been reported so far. However, the phase diagram of the binary system lithium chloride-yttrium chloride has not been reported in the literature up to now probably due to the hygroscopic property of yttrium chloride.

The phase diagram for the binary system LiCl-Ycl3 was determined by differential scanning calorimetry method over the temperature range 300-750C in the present study. All the samples were treated and prepared in the glove box under dry inert atmosphere, and hermetically encapsulated pans were used to measure the trasition points by dirrerential scanning calorimetry. It has been observed that this system has the eutectic point at 498C and 18 mol% Ycl3. ?Equilibrium curve of this system was calculated from thermochemical data also, and the result values were compared with the experimental ones.
