Precipitation of Bi and Bi sulfide in borate glasses.

Abstract

 

 Fine particles of Bi and Bi₂S₃ formed by precipitation from Na₂O-B₂O₃ glasses has been studied. Bi metal particles were formed by reduction of Bi₂O₃ by SnO added to the glass matrices. The size of particles was controlled by the annealing time of the sample glasses.  Bi₂S₃ was dissolved in the melts and then precipitated from the quenched glasses. The shape and size of these precipitates were observed by the transmission electron microscope and the microscopic structure was studied by XAFS.  Some of the results have been discussed in terms of thermodynamics.
